There comes a time in every homeowner’s life when they decide they are ready for a little bit of an upgrade. Whether they are looking for a new farmhouse kitchen or adding a sunroom off the back, there will be some sort of remodeling project that they want to do to their Queen’s property.
Wanting a change is no problem, but there are three things you should try to avoid when you are in the mood to remodel.
1. Thinking You Can Do All the Work. While Pinterest may be full of “Simple DIY” projects, doing serious remodeling work yourself can be challenging. Unless you are very handy with the tools and have all of the right equipment, trying to do big projects all by yourself will be disastrous. Some renovations will require you to have a bit of expertise (and maybe know a thing or two about building codes.) Sometimes it is okay to leave things to the professionals.
2. Hiring Friends and Family Who Aren’t in the Business. Sure your uncle may be handy with a saw, but that doesn’t mean he can gut your entire kitchen. Asking your friends or your family members to do things they aren’t qualified to can end up costing you double in the long run. Before letting Uncle Bob pour your concrete countertops, get a professional quote or two.
3. Budgeting to the Penny. You will always, always, always want to have a little bit of cushion when it comes to remodeling projects. There will most likely be a few contingencies that are going to pop up. These are things that your contractor couldn’t foresee, like finding a bunch of black mold behind your drywall, but they will have to be dealt with to finish the project.
For so many people, the thrill of renovating will outweigh the cost and the time, and as long as you are prepared, it should go off without a hitch.
